Bits and Pieces

Hey folks! Lots going on in my world, much of it cool. Here’s a quick rundown. I am going to be brief on each point, but there are links to explore if something interests you further.

  • Author Facebook page
For logistical reasons, I created a new Frank Zafiro Author Page. Please visit and like. My plan is to slowly migrate most of my writing and book-related content to that page from my personal page, though it’ll never be one hundred percent. But pretty shortly, I will stop double-posting, so if you’re interested in my books and such, please LIKE the new page so I can keep you informed. But definitely feel free to stay around the personal page and be friends and all.

  • Ireland
Just got back from the beauty that is Ireland, and folks, let me tell you what….I loved it. The countryside is gorgeous, the people are awesome, the driving is terrifying…but it was awesome. If people express an interest, I’ll write a post about the specifics of the trip, but suffice it to say we saw some iconic sights, listened to great music, and enjoyed many a pint.
    Kristi with her cider and
    I with my Guinness. Aye,
    t’was grand.
  • A Grifter’s Song Season 1
Season 1 is a wrap, with all six episodes now out. Additionally, Down and Out Books has issued season one in paperback. It clocks in at two volumes, containing all six stories… and if you’re a subscriber, you get all six for the price of five AND get the bonus episode that I wrote:  Come the Apocalypse. Never too late to subscribe, folks.
  • A Grifter’s Song Season 2
As season 1 wraps up, I’m hard at work editing (and writing) season 2. The roster is outstanding, full of diverse styles and voices – a great next step for the series. You get Eryk Pruitt, Asa Maria Bradley, Holly West, Eric Beetner, Scott Eubanks, and me. As before, a subscription nets you a price break and the bonus episode (I can tell you this — you are going to want the bonus episode for extra reveals!). The season 2 authors really took the characters and situations to a new level, and I’m excited for January to come!
  • A Gyro and a Glock
Speaking A Grifter’s Song, Michael Bracken and Trey Barker riffed on this format (part of which I got from Gary Phillips) for their own novella anthology series, Guns+Tacos. It’s set in Chicago, where some of the locals know they can always solve life’s problems by getting the special of the day from a taco truck….hint: it comes with a bang.

This is a true anthology, in that the only recurring characters are the ones on the taco truck. It’s available with the same subscription terms as my series. I’ve got the third episode of this, A Gyro and a Glock, and it comes out on September 1, 2019.

  • Italian language rights
Out of the blue, I got an email from an Italian publisher who wanted the Italian language rights to In the Shadow of El Paso and The Bastard Mummy. I said yes, of course. You can read more about this in my post about it, including a humorous translation tidbit that hits a little too close to home….
  • Audio version of The Menace of the Years
I’m thrilled to say that Books in Motion, the audio publisher of my River City series, has released The Menace of the Years in that format. It is once again narrated by Michael Bowen, who does a fantastic job. You can hear an audio sample here.

  • My tattoo
So it’s been a while since I got this tattoo up in Spokane, but not a lot of people have seen it. Any takers on the meaning/origin?
Yeah, it ain’t.

I will let slip that it is a song lyric, and I chose it because its meaning to me was multi-faceted. I don’t know if people find tattoo stories compelling (and since this is my one and only, it’s my only story, too), but if there’s any interest out there, I’ll share.

  • Back into the gym
Not that anyone probably cares about this, either, but… Kristi and I are back to the gym after a long absence. Sitting all day at the keyboard is rewarding but it doesn’t burn a lot of calories. As you might suss out from the above arm photo, or my social media shots, I’ve gotten fat. Since my knees are feeling a little rickety, running is temporarily on hold in lieu of walking and biking. There’s no rear-round hockey here, unfortunately. That left another option — hit the weights and the heavy bag. Since it is summer, it’s been easy for the two of us to do this together. We pump some iron and then go pound the heavy bag for a while. Kristi is learning to punch (complete with her cute pink bag gloves), and she’s getting good at it fast.
  • 7 Criminal Minds
Just a reminder, I’m still blogging bi-weekly along with my nine comrades over at 7 Criminal Minds. The August questions are really good ones, and I’m excited to dive into them. But the blog itself is worth following, given the diverse group of authors there.
  • Noir at the Bar Seattle
I had a great time up in Seattle on July 25 at the Noir at the Bar. Arranged by Nick Feldman and held at the Alibi Room (could there be a more noir location?), it was a lot of fun. In addition to myself, Colin Conway, Renee Patrick, Danny Gardner, Roz Ray, Michael Fowles, and Baird Nuckolls (yes, her real name) all gave spectacular readings. I chose to read the beginning of The Concrete Smile. You can see a few pics from the evening on my Facebook page.
  • Charlie-316
Still what I think is my best book yet, Charlie-316 is getting some great reviews from readers, authors, and critics. You can check it out on Goodreads to get an idea of the reaction. This is the first of a four-book arc that Colin and I pretty stoked about.
  • Podcast
The fate of Wrong Place, Write Crime is in your hands!
Seriously.
There’s a very short survey that I’ve posted, asking what people prefer — longer episodes, shorter ones, this feature or that. I’d really appreciate your input, as I have another month or so before making a final decision.
  • ATOG
As part of the newly dubbed SpoCompton series, Down and Out Books is re-issuing At Their Own Game in advance of next January’s new release, In the Cut. There will be at least two more SpoCompton novels.
  • Bouchercon

I’m going to Bouchercon 2019 in Dallas in late October. Are you? They haven’t announced the panel assignments yet, so we’ll see how that goes. But we can just hang out at the bar with Jim Ziskin. You can take advantage of the opportunity to ask me about the tattoo, or to see for yourself if the gym is doing any good, or get the scoop on my summer trip to Westeros (see end of post).

  • WIPs
What am I working on now?  A lot, actually. I’m editing season 2 of A Grifter’s Song, and I’m writing episodes 12 and 13. Pretty shortly, I’ll take another pass at the third Charlie-316 novel. I’m working on a dark comedy novel with Lawrence Kelter, and am tapping away at the next River City novel, Place of Wrath and Tears for a 2019 release. And some other things I’ll hold off on letting out of the bag for now.
