So begins my only collaboration so far with Bonnie R. Paulson, The Trade Off.
Now let me say that I think this is a great beginning, and pretty much gives you the philosophy of one of the two main characters in a nutshell. I mean, you tack on “and family matters” and that’s Bull.
So I’d give this a high grade, like an A- (Yeah, I know, pretty high for mister hard grader over here). But I must confess, I didn’t write this. Bonnie did, because she wrote Bull.
I wrote Gus, and the first line in her chapter is:
Anton wasn’t in the mood to bargain with me.
Probably a B or a B-?

Yes, you read right. Bonnie, who is a woman, wrote Bull, a male character. I wrote Gus, a female character (and I’m a man, if you’re scoring at home).
Kind of a cool twist, innit? Not only a collaboration, but a cross-gender collaboration. Bonnie and I talked a bit about it on the collaborator’s episode of Wrong Place, Write Crime, but one thing I will tell you was that there was a sex scene that spanned two chapters, starting at the end of one and continuing at the beginning of the other. It was kind of awkward to be writing a sex scene with a woman I know but am not romantically linked, and in fact, we are both married to other people…and to top it off, we are each writing from the opposite gender’s perspective… I mean, it’s a little crazy, right?
But despite the occasional awkwardness during the writing process, The Trade Off turned out good, and writing with Bonnie was a positive experience. I’m proud of this book.
