More Grifter's Song!

 I realized today that I was remiss in not mentioning that Gary Phillips’s episode of A Grifter’s Song (#4 – The Movie Makers) was released on 4/1/2019.

The Movie Makers is set in Hollywood and sees Rachel take on the role of a fake producer. Meanwhile, Sam pretends to be a self-help guru. Both target a well known action star who is trying to get an artistic project off the ground.

Gary was the inspiration for the format of A Grifter’s Song. Rather than me writing about four episodes a year, which was my original plan, I adopted the model that he was using for a different (and hopefully still to be launched) project. That is, each episode penned by a different author, and monthly episodes. I owe him a debt of gratitude, and it is only partially repaid by asking him to be a part of this series.

Gary had some interesting things to say about this novella (and his other work) during an interview I did with him on Wrong Place, Write Crime. Among other things, he pointed out that while Rachel and Sam were both posing as something they were not, what really is fake in Hollywood? Give the short episode a listen, and then go read The Movie Makers… you won’t be disappointed.

On 5/1/2019, the fifth episode of A Grifter’s Song will drop. Lost in Middle America, written by Colin Conway, is set in Lima, Ohio and centers around the pair of grifters reluctantly agreeing to help an old friend of Sam’s. The reluctance is because the man is a former pimp, and it is overcome when they find out what the man’s target for revenge has secreted away in his safe deposit box. How they get to that loot is another matter.

I interviewed Colin on Wrong Place, Write Crime about this novella, too. Look for that to drop on May Day as well.

This season will conclude in June with Jim Wilsky’s Losing Streak, but we’ll get to that as it draws closer.
