Earlier this year, I decided to experiment. I’ve been podcasting a couple of years now. Quite a few people have told me I have a good voice for that medium. Some have added that it would also be good for narration. I’ve been encouraged to narrate my own books but have balked at the prospect.
For one, I didn’t believe I had the technical know-how.
And secondly, I’m not a voice actor.
Still, the idea kept buzzing in my ear. I eventually decided to give it a try. I chose The Cleaner for my maiden voyage for a couple of reasons. It was the only one of my released short story collections that didn’t have an audio version. That didn’t seem fair. I could set right that wrong. And, if I’m being honest, I also figured that if I tanked, well, at least I wouldn’t be ruining one of my novels with a failed effort.
How’s that for confident? And for beating up on short stories in favor of novels, too, while I’m at it?
I dove into the research on the technical aspects. This ultimately helped me out when it came to my podcast, too. I think if someone were to listen to a recent episode and then go back to one from the first season, you’d hear a significant difference in sound quality. Basically, I learned how to master. A little.
On the voice acting front, I just leaned into it. I’m not purporting to be a voice actor. Rather, this book’s narration should be taken in the same vein as an author reading at a bookstore event – only it’s a private one, just for you. Hopefully, there’s a particular charm in the author reading his/her own work that overcomes the gap in voice acting talent.
I recorded. I edited. I re-recorded. I asked my wife to narrate a pair of stories. She rocked them. I edited some more. I mastered. And then I uploaded to ACX and I waited.
A few days ago, The Cleaner was officially released on audio.
It’s out there in the world, providing you with another way to enjoy fiction and providing me with another way to enjoy that exquisite vulnerability that any artist experiences. Like I said, I’m not a sound engineer and I’m not a voice actor. With that in mind, I feel good about the end result. The production value is on par with other audio books I’ve listened to. And my narration is at least as good as any reading I’ve ever given (Kristi’s is great, though).
