Your Zafiro Update

Collecting together a few random happenings in my Zafiro world….

On Feb 22, 2019 at Roundabout Books in Bend, OR at 6:30 PM, I’ll be joining other local authors for a panel discussion, and I assume some reading and Q&A…it’ll be my first time at this event. Harbinger is out, and my novella, The Concrete Smile, was released as part of my series A Grifter’s Song…so I’ll be talking about all of those, and, of course, the newest River City novel, The Menace of the Years. If you’re in central Oregon, come and join us!

Nigel Bird had me on his blog recently, and his suggestion was an interesting one — interview myself. So I did, and ironically, I talked about collaboration.

Vicki Carter interviewed me on her podcast Authors of the Pacific Northwest, and that will air on March 18, 2019.

The anthology, The Odds Were Against Them seems to be creeping closer to publication. We got an early mock up of the cover, and a promise of a February release from the publisher and passed on by the fine editor of the anthology, Oren Litwin. My story in this project is a bit of historical fiction called “Titus, My Brother” and is set in Roman Britain in 61 CE.

I might be tempting the fates a little bit by mentioning it, but I’m working on another short story for Oren right now — a new anthology he’s putting together in the fantasy genre. Here’s hoping that my entry is good enough to make the cut!

I’ll be attending the Left Coast Crime Conference from March 28-31, 2019 in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

This will be my first LCC since 2007, so I’m looking forward to it. I got on a panel that is scheduled for Thursday, March 28 at 1:15 PM and will be about collaboration. If you’re planning on being at LCC, see you there!

Also while at LCC, I’ll be one of the authors reading for Noir at the Bar event on March 28, 2019 at 7:30-9:30 PM in the hotel bar where Left Coast Crime is taking place (Hyatt Regency). I was pretty thrilled to get invited to participate, and there are some great authors on the docket. Come listen to some noir and drink some Pinot…Noir. Or the poison of your choice.

I’m registered and booked for Bouchercon in Dallas, TX from October 31-November 3, 2019. This will be my second Bouchercon, after last year’s virgin foray into the biggest mystery conference there is. I had a great time, met some great people, learned things…everything you want from a conference.

This trip will be extra special. First off, I’ll be reconnecting with an old army friend who is also one of my best beta readers, and secondly, I’ll get to meet Jim Wilsky in person for the first time. As in ever. Much like getting to shake Eric Beetner‘s hand (finally) at Bouchercon last year, I will be shaking Jim’s in Dallas. That’s pretty amazing when you realize we’ve written four books together over the span of more than seven years…crazy, huh?

Some WIP news….

Colin Conway and I are working on the revisions of the sequel to Charlie-316. Charlie-316 will be out in June 2019, and the novels that follow in this four-book arc will be released in June of each year.

Down and Out Books is re-releasing Some Degree of Murder on March 18. This 2012 novel was the first one Colin Conway and I collaborated on, and remains one of our best-selling titles. The audio version by Conor Hall is, as the kids are saying these days, lit.

Down and Out books will also re-issue my novel, At Their Own Game in September of 2019. For now, it is still for sale, but it will be de-published soon so that D&O can re-issue.

A new novel, IN THE CUT, is still in the revision stage but I should have the manuscript to D&O in a month or so. This story is set against the backdrop of an outlaw motorcycle gang and takes place in the same universe as At Their Own Game. Jake Stankovic even has a couple of appearances. This universe will see a direct sequel to ATOG, and another related book as well. I hope to have both of those written by the end of 2020, though I don’t imagine they’ll see publication until ’21 or ’22.

Larry Kelter and I are in the beginning stages of a new project together. More on that as it progresses.

The new format for the nearly weekly Open & Shut episodes of Wrong Place, Write Crime seem to be going over well. Unlike the featured episode each month, these are short form, running 8-15 minutes or so. Perfect for that drive to the grocery store! Recent interviews include Angel Luis Colon, JD Rhoades, Nick Kolakowski, and Richie Narvaez. Check ’em out!

If you’re into the longer form, the January episode features Dana King, and he’s got some interesting stuff to say.

And the series A Grifter’s Song is strong out of the gate, with my own The Concrete Smile and JD Rhoades’s People Like Us leading the charge. Lawrence Kelter’s The Whale will drop on March 1.

Were you hoping for some River City news? Well, don’t think my intrepid officers will be left behind. 2019 will see the release of two River City novels. Number six, Place of Wrath and Tears (henceforth PoWaT) will be out in the first half of the year, and number seven, Dirty Little Town (DLT) is on the slate for the second half of the year.

PoWaT is a definite for this timeline. DLT is likely, though if absolutely necessary, I’ll push it to early 2020. I may take a slight break from River City after DLT, but there will be at least one per year moving forward. The book pages for PoWaT and DLT are already up on my site if you’re curious what each story will be. Suffice it to say that Katie MacLeod will remain the heart of the series though number seven. And as long as she stays alive, she’ll always be a character that has a role in these novels.

At one time, I had considered a significant time jump after DLT, which takes place in 2003. The jump would have brought the series up to roughly present day. However, when I started looking at all of the important, emotional events that would occur during that skipped time period, I realized I couldn’t let them all be experienced via flashback or recollection. So I resolved instead to do two things. One would be to get a River City novel out at least once a year. And two, I decided that allowing for a longer time jump between each novel would eventually get me closer to present day.

With both Waist Deep (the first Kopriva mystery) and Some Degreee of Murder (a stand alone set in River City) happening in 2005, I think it’s safe to say that whenever River City #8 is set, it will likely not be any earlier than 2006. So, we’re moving things along…

And that is all the time we have today. Thanks for following along — I really appreciate it. As always, feel free to ask any questions or comment, either here or in social media.
