Come Try a Pair of Writing Seminars!

Beginning this Fall, I’m going to be teaching some writing seminars.

Teaching is nothing new to me. I’ve taught a lot before, actually. I’ve taught law enforcement subjects – sexual assault investigation and report writing, for example. And I’ve written a textbook on the latter. Also, I’ve done a few classes on creative writing. Frankly, they are fun. They give the teacher as much energy toward writing as the student.

I’m always reminded of something Gary Provost wrote decades ago. “Sometimes another writer will understand what the rest of the world does not.” Mr. Provost helped me a lot with that statement, and it’s part of the reason I love to teach (I’d say facilitate because it is closer to the reality of the matter, but it is such an overused word these days). People have helped me (and continue to) in my ongoing writing journey, and I’d like to pay that forward a little.

If you’re up for a one-day, intensive outing, I will be co-teaching one with T. Dawn Richard on Saturday, October 26th from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the Service Station (9315 N Nevada St in Spokane). The cost is $99 per writer.

Dawn and I will be exploring (at a rapid pace) such things as:

* Plot Structure

* Character

* Voice

* Dialogue

* Point of View

* Pacing

*Setting

* Revising and Editing

* Publishing

* Writing Philosophy

* The Writing Fellowship

…and more!

Dawn and I have taught a few times before and have a good synergy. Our careers and publishing experiences overlap in some areas but there are also some very different experiences that we will be able to share with the assembled writers to help them make their own choices…and avoid costly mistakes.

If you want to give this one day intensive a try, email Dawn to sign up:  tdawnrichard@gmail.com

I am also launching a three part seminar series on writing novels (mystery or otherwise). Part I (Writing Your Novel) will begin on October 1, 2013. Part II (Revising & Editing Your Novel) will follow in January/February 2014, and Part III (Publishing Your Novel) will follow that in April/May 2014.

The first class (WRITE YOUR NOVEL!) will meet every Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:30 at Auntie’s Bookstore, from October 1 – November 5. The cost is $99 per writer.

Interestingly enough, November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), in which the writer is challenged to complete an entire novel in one month. That’s part of the reason I’m starting this course in October — in case the writer wants to gear up for NaNoWriMo and end up with a finished first draft by the end of November.

In the first class, we’ll work on:

Þ Capturing Your Ideas

Þ Writing Philosophy

Þ Planning Your Novel

Þ Plot and Structure

Þ Character

Þ Dialogue

Þ Setting

Þ Pacing

Þ Theme

Þ Getting Past Tough Spots (Plot Problems and Writer’s Block)

Þ Being a Finisher

…and more!

You can take all three classes, or any one of them (as space allows — returning writers will get preference). Each will focus on the stage at hand — getting a first draft finished, revising and editing, and publishing decisions and processes. These courses are co-sponsored by Auntie’s Bookstore and Gray Dog Press. Both entities will lend their respective skills to the writer’s experience during these courses. For example, Auntie’s is planning an event at the conclusion of the third class, and GDP will be offering some publisher expertise at a couple of different stages, as well as moving submissions from any interested writers to the top of the submission pile for consideration.

Like the flyer says, if you’re struggling to start or finish your novel, I can help. Plus you’ll be surrounded by an immediate support group of other people who share your passion, and who understand…writers.
