That’s how I ended up starting the first Stefan Kopriva novel. For a long time, the story actually started with what is now chapter two. The opening line of that chapter is: I didn’t plan on getting kicked out of the hockey game.

But Kopriva has a lot of regrets and even though this book is set ten years after the fateful events in Heroes Often Fail, he is still haunted by what happened. He still dreams about it. So it’s a fitting opening line.

Does it hook? I’m going to give it a C+.

Interestingly enough, Waist Deep actually takes place just a few months before the events in Some Degree of Murder. Both are in the River City universe. I didn’t initially plan for Kopriva to become his own series. This novel was about his search for redemption, and once I reached the end of the book, I felt like I’d accomplished that. But I also realized his story wasn’t over….
